Higher Fingle Farm has full Organic status, as part of this we are
committed to several conservation and environmental projects to
preserve the natural look and feel of the farm.
We feel it is important to preserve Britain's natural farming
landscape.
One of our biggest projects is the Enhanced Hedgerow Management.
Our hedges are maintained to traditional local styles; they are kept at
over 2 metres in height and a mixture of widths for the most
environmental benefit. No more than a third of our hedgerows are cut in
any one-year and each hedge is cut no more often than every three
years. We avoid hedge trimming between the 28th of February and the 1st
of September to encourage bird nesting and other wildlife. We do not
cultivate or apply manure to the land 2m either side of the hedges to
encourage a natural habitat. To improve the character of the hedges we
also allow randomly spaced trees to grow within them, helping to fit in
with the local landscape.

We are also committed to encouraging bird nesting on our farm; by
placing owl-nesting boxes around our farm and farm buildings we hope to
provide a safe haven for one of our countries oldest and most regal
birds..
Finally we have also planted a mixed heritage orchard. This is to
increase the number of natural habitats on the farm and will also
provide more natural shade for our free-range poultry. We have planted
Old Devon varieties of Apple, Plum, Pear and Nut trees, some of the trees have been kindly paid for by Devon County Council Farms Estate.
